You did it — you finally got your tattoo. But once you got home… or even several months or years later… doubt starts to creep in.
What if the tattoo doesn’t feel like “you” anymore?
Maybe it’s too visible, no longer fits your style, or you’re going through life changes that make you see it differently?
👉 Regret can hit at any time — not just right after the appointment. And most importantly, it’s normal. Our tastes, our bodies, and our identities evolve — and sometimes, a tattoo doesn’t follow that evolution.
But don’t panic. It’s more common than you think. And most of the time, it’s not irreversible. In this article, we’ll go over the main reasons people regret tattoos, what you need to know before panicking, and the options available to you.
Why do I regret my tattoo?
You don’t like how it looks (yet)
This is the most common situation, especially right after getting tattooed.
Your skin is red and swollen, the tattoo looks too dark or too bright, it seems bigger or more “present” than what you imagined…
➡️ Don’t worry. Your skin needs time to heal, and your eyes need time to get used to the new design.
The colors will settle, the outlines will soften, and your perception will shift.
It usually takes about 3 to 4 weeks for the final result to appear.
The tattoo is actually botched
This is another valid reason for regret: crooked lines, shaky outlines, a design that doesn’t match the stencil — or worse, a spelling mistake.
👉 In these cases, the issue may come down to the tattoo artist you chose.
And that’s one of the most crucial decisions in the tattoo process.
Choosing the right tattoo artist: a key step
A tattoo is for life, so it’s essential to choose a professional you trust, who offers:
- A style that matches your vision
- Impeccable hygiene
- Real listening skills and honest advice
- Strong references (portfolio, word of mouth, client reviews)
⚠️ Beware of false bargains. A “cheap” tattoo can quickly turn into a regretted tattoo.
Covers, touch-ups, or laser removal are all more expensive than getting it done right the first time.
At our studio, each project is handled with care — from the first consultation to design discussions, placement validation, and aftercare advice. Everything is in place to make sure you feel confident and informed at every step.
What are my options if I still regret it?
Give it some time
Many doubts disappear after a few days.
The tattoo changes — and so does your perception.
Sometimes, you just need to give yourself a little distance from that first reaction.
Consider a cover-up
If you truly don’t feel comfortable with your tattoo, it’s often possible to cover it up (or rework it) with a new design.
A cover-up is a creative solution that lets you turn the page and get something more aligned with who you are now.
💡 Keep in mind: cover-ups should always be done by an experienced artist. The final piece will usually be darker and denser to properly mask the old tattoo.
Go for laser removal
This is a technical option to completely erase the tattoo.
It takes time, budget, and a certain tolerance for pain.
Laser removal is worth considering if you no longer want any tattoo in that spot at all.
In short
A tattoo can sometimes spark doubt or regret — especially in the beginning.
But in most cases, that feeling is temporary.
And when it’s not? There are always options: rework it, cover it, or remove it.
The key is to be well supported from the start.
