Summer Tattoos: Sunshine, Swimming… and a Few Things to Keep in Mind

Thinking about getting a tattoo this summer? We totally get it. Warmer days often go hand-in-hand with a craving for change, freedom, and let’s be honest, a fresh new tattoo to mark a moment.
And despite what people might say, yes, you can absolutely get tattooed in the summer: you just need to be a bit more careful during the healing process.

Why do people say winter is better?

In winter, your skin is less exposed to the sun, you sweat less, and you tend to wear more covering clothes. In short, it’s easier to let your tattoo heal undisturbed.
But let’s be real, if you’ve got a tattoo project that excites you, waiting until winter can feel like forever.
Good news: as long as you follow the aftercare instructions, there’s no wrong season to get tattooed.

Why summer tattoos can actually be great

  • You’re more likely to be on vacation, so you’re relaxed and have time to care for your tattoo properly.
  • You naturally wear looser, lighter clothes, perfect for avoiding friction.
  • And let’s be honest: nothing beats the feeling of showing off a fresh tattoo under a tank top or a flowy dress… once it’s fully healed, of course!

What to know right after your appointment

Once the tattoo session is done, a new phase begins: healing. On average, it takes about 3 weeks, depending on your skin and where the tattoo is placed.
During this time, here are a few golden rules:

  • No direct sunlight on your tattoo: UV rays are harsh on healing skin. They can burn it, distort the colors, or cause uneven healing. Cover your tattoo with a light cotton garment if you go outside.
  • No swimming: Yep, it’s tough when it’s 30°C out, but it’s essential. Pools (chlorine), the ocean (salt), or lakes (bacteria) can all lead to infection or slow down healing. Showers are fine, long baths are not.
  • Avoid friction: Wear loose, breathable clothes. Tight jeans or straps rubbing on fresh ink? Not ideal.
  • Moisturize carefully: Use a proper tattoo aftercare cream, not too greasy, in a thin layer. And most importantly, follow your tattoo artist’s instructions to the letter.

And after the healing process?

Once those 3 weeks are over and your skin has fully recovered, you can show off your tattoo again. But don’t skip sun protection.
Always apply SPF 50 sunscreen before exposing your ink to the sun – like Salomé in the photo above.
Even years later, this will help preserve your lines and colors for as long as possible.

To sum up:

Yes, you can get tattooed in summer.
No, it’s not risky if you take care of it properly.
