Exhibition by Amaury Grisel: ANATONIRISME

Amaury Grisel, a visual artist from Montreuil, collects and restores 19th and early 20th-century science books. Fascinated by the illustrations—known as figures—that enrich these works, he brings them to new life through engraving, imbuing them with a mystical, almost cosmic quality that resonates within the world of tattoo art.

Initially, these illustrations were used to enhance his photographic portraits. In 2019, he began creating montages to adorn the bindings of restored books before engraving them onto unconventional surfaces like wood, glass, stone, and old paper. This exploration of textures and materials recalls tattooing techniques, where each surface tells its unique story.

Since 2022, Grisel has been reinterpreting these illustrations from his old books, almost like grimoires, assembling them into conceptual manifestations—anatomical utopias. His chimeras, set within dreamlike landscapes, evoke living tattoos: fragments of bodies and dreams intertwined in a visual poetry where shadow and light play a central role. These imaginary puzzles create an organic link between paper and skin, opening a door to the intimate and subconscious, like inked artworks etched deep within the soul.
